Voices from the Campaign for Black Male Achievement

Khalil’s Way was inspired by the thousands of children who shared traumatic stories about being bullied in classrooms, locker rooms, and at bus stops, and countless other places.

Khalil is an 11-year-old boy who lives in a tough neighborhood and is the victim of a school bully. Khalil is an amazing chess player but struggles to make friends. He’s not the coolest kid you’ll ever meet, plus his mom and dad split up after their family lost everything during Hurricane Katrina.

As parents, educators and concerned citizens, we believe that youth deserve to live in a society where they feel safe, secure, accepted and valued. This means that adults must create schools, playgrounds and other spaces where children are free of teasing, name-calling, harassment, threats and all forms of violence and intimidation.

OSI forum - Black Male Achievement - What Need to Be Done

The OSI Campaign for Black Male Achievement hosted a roundtable discussion facilitated by Shawn Dove. Panelist include: David Miller, Co- Founder of the Urban Leadership Institute and author of Dare To Be King Curriculum, Kenny Barnes, CEO of ROOT, Inc, Joe Jones, CEO of Center for Urban Families, Dr. Derek Suite, Full Circle Health and Kenneth Braswell, New York State Fatherhood Initiative. Raising Him Alone (RHA) is dedicated to researching, designing, and implementing a campaign to support the social well being of single mothers raising boys. Through a series of intense community forums, workshops and support group initiatives, RHA seeks to increase access to resources in the areas of Health & Well Being (Mental Health), Educational Support & Advocacy, as well as Financial Literacy.

The campaign is based on numerous conversations with local and national organizations on ways to better support African American boys. Additionally, Miller & Stevens hosted a series of focus groups and interviews with single mothers raising boys across the U.S. to determine the successes and challenges which confront these families. Overwhelmingly, mothers indicated issues related to understanding male development, issues with their sons father’s and financial constraints as major challenges in their lives.
